Schindler w Krakowie: między historią a filmem

Poznaj historię Schindlera w Krakowie, dawną fabrykę, getto i miejsca znane z filmu.

Steven Spielberg w Stanach Zjednoczonych przeczytał książkę o Oskarze Schindlerze i postanowił nakręcić film opowiadający historię „dobrego” Niemca.

           Płaszów i koniec wojny

Dwa światy - historia i film

           Steven Spielberg i filmowy Kraków

A Walk Through Cracow: Hidden Stories Along Grodzka Street

Explore Krakow Old Town on foot from Wawel Hill to the Main Market Square, discovering Grodzka Street, historic churches, local food and hidden gems

Welcome to Cracow – we think that you've just arrived to this wonderful city and you're wondering how to spend a little bit of your free time. Perhaps taking a walk through the historic old town of Cracow would be the solution?

Start Your Walk at Wawel Hill

Let's start at the most important place of our city which is, of course, the Wawel Hill. At the end of Grodzka street, (whose name you can easily translate into “the way to the castle”) nearby one of entrances to the hill, you can see a stone statue.

That's a copy of the famous Zbruch Idol – a depiction of one of the most important Slavic gods, Światowid. The original sculpture is kept at the Archeological Museum of Cracow. But here, at the location of the first traces of human settlements in the area of Cracow, the sculpture copy reminds everyone of the Slavic roots of our city.

           Kanonicza Street and Długosz’s House

If you're interested in looking for layers of history, step into Kanonicza Street. One of the oldest streets inside the old town, it’s also called the most stunning and picturesque places of Cracow. There, you can see huge palaces which used to belong to Polish bishops and cardinals.

At the beginning of the street, under the number 25, there's a tenement called “Długosz’s House”. Jan Długosz was alive in the 15th century. He worked at the royal court as the tutor of the king's children, but he was also a chronicler, author of one of the most famous books of history of Poland.

What's also quite interesting, he's got eleven brothers and all of them were called... Jan!

Mary Magdalene’s Square and Cracow’s Churches

At the mid-point of Kanonicza you can turn into Mary Magdalene‘s Square. That's where a gothic church once stood, until it was destroyed in the 19th century.

But don't worry, we still have a lot of churches in Cracow. In fact, sometimes our city is nicknamed „a small Rome”.

So, let's count! Facing Grodzka street, you can see in the front of you two white buildings - on your left hand side, a romanesque church of Saint Andrew, one of the oldest in Cracow, built in the 11th century.

On your right hand side, there's a baroque temple dedicated to saint Peter and Paul. As that was the first building made in this style in Cracow, founded by the kings Sigismundus the Third, some people who were used to the more traditional medieval way of building, used to call it controversial and... so small, that the Apostles cannot fit in, so they need to stay at the fence.

What's more, the church, created for the Jesuits, as all of their churches, is inspired by the Roman church of Il Gesù. So yes, it is highly possible that you've seen it before somewhere else.

If you're lucky and you're visiting Cracow on a Thursday, step inside St. Peter and Paul’s – throughout the day there is a presentation of Foucault ‘s pendulum proving Earth’s rotation.

Collegium Iuridicum and the Art of Igor Mitoraj

Opposite the two churches, there is the second university building ever built in Poland. That's Collegium Iuridicum, created from two tenements joined together at the beginning of 15th century.

It used to be build for law faculty, but nowadays it's shared both by law and art history students. If you step into its courtyard, take a look especially at the arcades, inspired by the Wawel Castle, and the bronze sculpture by Igor Mitoraj, one of the well known Polish modern artists.

His second work of art is placed right at the Main Market Square, opposite to the former town hall tower, and it’s the big head of beheaded Amor, ancient god of love.

           A Taste of Communist-Era Cracow

Now, let's go down Grodzka street. On the right hand side you can see first a milk bar, called “Pod Temidą” (“Under the Themis”) one of the most iconic food places from the Polish People Republic, the communist era time.

That's a bar with tasty, homemade food, mostly basic dairy and flour dishes and soups. The prices are low, the dishes are yummy, but be careful – thanks to those pros, it’s always crowded.

           The Home of Veit Stoss

Nearby the milk bar you can spot also a beige building (number 39) which was a home of Veit Stoss, German sculptor from Nuremberg, who was the author of the most famous altar in Cracow.

This masterpiece is the altarpiece from St. Mary’s Basilica, the largest wooden gothic altarpiece in the world.

Why Cracow Is Called “a Small Rome”

In the middle of the All Saints Square, you can see for yourself the reason why Cracow is compared to Rome. If you stand there and look all around, wherever you look, you’ll see a church.

At Grodzka street - St. Andrew's in front of you, at the Main Market Square - St. Adalbert’s (also, one of the oldest and smallest christian temples in Cracow), on your left - the Holy Trinity church which belongs to Dominican monks, and on the right – St. Francis church, which is under the care of the Franciscan order.

It's also worth visiting for the stunning mix of gothic architecture and art nouveau frescos, and stained glass windows.

Discover the Hidden Gems of Cracow

Grodzka street will lead you straight to the beating heart of the city, which is, of course, the Main Market Square.

But as you can see, it's always worth it to take a step away from the main path and have a look to the sides, to discover hidden gems and underappreciated stories.

Wawel Through the Centuries: Kings, Dragons and the History of Poland

Discover the history of Wawel Castle in Krakow, from Polish kings and royal coronations to dragon legends, Austrian rule, Nazi occupation and today's museum.

The Beginning of Wawel's Royal History

Wawel Hill has always dominated the landscape of Cracow. Almost from the very beginnings of the Polish state, it served as its political center. It's therefore hardly surprising that the Polish ruler Władysław the Elbow-high chose Wawel Cathedral as the site of his coronation in 1320.

It's worth noting that the ruler's nickname stemmed from his rather modest height – "elbow" was a unit of measurement, and admittedly, he didn't have many. Nevertheless, he ushered in a new era in Wawel's history. From then on, almost all Polish monarchs were crowned and buried at Wawel Cathedral.

           Royal Tombs and Medieval Symbolism

Visiting Wawel Cathedral and admiring the royal tombstones allows for a better understanding of how artistic styles changed. It also offers a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in the strange medieval symbolism, often obscured by modern times.

Examples of such symbolism include the fantastical and real animals that rest beneath the feet of sculpted images of monarchs. Today, for example, it is impossible to say with any certainty what the menacing-looking dragon resting beneath the feet of the Polish King Władysław Jagiełło signifies.

           The Mysterious "Dragon Bones"

Continuing on the topic of dragons, it's worth noting that at the entrance to the Cathedral are "dragon bones." Of course, we're not trying to convince anyone that a fire-breathing beast actually existed. However, it should be assumed that our ancestors interpreted the remains of Ice Age animals discovered in the Cracow area as the bones of a terrifying reptile.

Sigismund the Old and Wawel's Golden Age

A very important ruler for the history of Wawel Hill is Sigismund I, known as the Old. It's worth explaining where this nickname comes from. The king actually lived to a very old age for his time (he died at over eighty). But this was not the main reason for giving him this nickname.

The main reason was the coronation of his only son, also named Sigismund, while his father was still alive (which, incidentally, happened only once in Polish history). So, technically, we had an "old king" and a "young king," hence the nickname "old."

It was this monarch who is largely responsible for the present appearance of Wawel Castle. The residence was rebuilt in the first half of the 16th century in the Italian Renaissance style. And it was during his reign that the castle experienced its golden age.

           Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever.

The Vasas and the Move to Warsaw

The following years were not so favorable for the royal residence on Wawel Hill. Suffice it to say that just 50 years after King Sigismund's death, another monarch of the same name, this time from the Swedish Vasa family, moved his residence to Warsaw.

It's worth explaining two issues at this point. First, how Swedish kings came to be on the Polish throne. To understand this, knowledge of Polish politics at the end of the 16th century is essential. When King Sigismund II died childless, a new method of electing kings was introduced, almost similar to modern elections. Since Sigismund III Vasa's mother was the daughter of Sigismund I, he was considered the natural candidate for the Polish throne. And so, the Swedish king ascended the Polish throne.

           The Fire at Wawel Castle

The second issue is the still-popular myth that the king himself set fire to his Wawel castle while conducting alchemical experiments (which, by the way, he actually conducted with his "professional alchemist"), forcing him to relocate.

This myth has been debunked, but it doesn't change the fact that part of the castle was actually engulfed in flames. And it was then rebuilt in a different Baroque style, which we can clearly see when visiting the Wawel halls today.

The End of the Royal Era

After years of glory, Wawel Hill lost its importance, but fortunately, the most important element of its royal splendor was not deprived. It was there almost until the end of the First Polish Republic (1795 and the Third Partition of Poland ended its existence for over 120 years).

As I mentioned earlier, until 1734, that is, almost until the very end, royal coronations and burials took place at Wawel Hill, specifically in Wawel Cathedral, making this beautiful church the most important Polish church to this day.

           Wawel Under Austrian Rule

So what happened on Wawel Rock when the kings disappeared? Well, things weren't going so well. For almost the entire 19th century, Kraków, and therefore Wawel, were part of the Austrian Empire, and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It was the new "rulers" of Wawel who decided to turn Cracow into a fortress, which involved housing soldiers in the former royal halls. Needless to say, this was not beneficial for our castle. Many elements of the former, magnificent architecture were lost, replaced by simple solutions.

Fortunately, after World War I, thanks to the generosity of many individuals and institutions, and at enormous financial cost, the former royal residence was restored to its previous glory, ushering in a completely new era in its history. A time when the castle serves as a museum.

The Darkest Chapter in Wawel's History

When recalling the Castle's history, it's impossible to ignore the darkest period in its past: the Nazi occupation. The former royal seat was chosen by Nazi dignitary Hans Frank as his residence, where he lived with his family. This was a time when the swastika flag, hated by Cracow residents, flew atop the hill.

           Wawel Today

After 1945, the castle was revived as a museum, and remains so to this day.

Therefore, I can only invite everyone on a journey through history to learn about the lives of Polish rulers, royal scandals, and understand why Wawel remains such a special place for Poles to this day.

Se come caminando.
